2013 Niepoort Dão Rótulo Tinto

Post by Ronald Wortel »

My current favourite summer red. Just a lovely combination of red and black fruit, spice and mineral notes. Supple and juicy with light, ripe tannin. So very well balanced and utterly drinkable. Great for the price. 88/100

Seems like a low score for such accolades.

Why? It'n not an overly complex wine, just a very good daily drinker.

What is the price point you got these for?

Thanks for the note.

"Favorite summer red" & "So very well balanced and utterly drinkable" should warrant more than 88 points, no? A lot of Dao's are not so complex or have a rustic character to them.

Moses,
Not really. Often these value wines are just that. They give good pleasure without being blockbusters.

Indeed. 88 is a perfectly good score for a wine in this category. According to Wine Spectator's rating chart 85-89 is a wine that's "very good: a wine with special qualities". Perfectly in line with my notes I would say.

Andy, I bought this here in NZ for NZ$22, which translates to around US$14. I believe it's around €10 in Europe.
