In the autumn of 1991, with a vineyard full of grapes not covered by the beneficio – port quota system – and an Australian winemaker, David Baverstock, raring to make “normal wine” in port country, Sophia Bergqvist did not hesitate. She phoned the rival port company by whom Baverstock was then employed to ask permission to let him loose. “Oh, please, yes, he’s been wanting to do that with our grapes, just get him off my back,” was the response – and Quinta de la Rosa’s Douro wine was born......
