1987 Krohn Colheita

Post by Glenn E. »

A combined note from pop-and-pour and 48 hours later. I'd intended to taste it at 24 hours as well, but was too busy and missed the chance. I purchased 6 of these from Premier Cru in June of this year and drank the first (without a TN) over my Anniversary in July.

1987 Krohn Colheita
bottled 2011

Color: Medium dark tawny. Still plenty of color left, but lots of tawny/tan/brown notes as well. I wouldn't say that it looks old yet, but it's looking older.

Nose: Nutty with some dried apricot backing. Overtones of bourbon vanilla and sweet spirit. The nuts seem to be pecans and almonds.

Palate: Tart peaches - is that a thing? - and a lot of maple add character to more normal notes of caramel and butterscotch. There's a toastiness that isn't easily identifiable as coffee/toffee/etc but is still clearly some form of torrefaction. Faint pecans or possibly... hazelnuts? Slightly rough edge, but otherwise an excellent 24-yr old Colheita.

Finish: Very long - several minutes - with mild/pleasant citrus and a nice green apple tail.

Score: 92 points. The rough edge was distracting enough to drag it down out of outstanding range where it was when initially opened. It may resolve after a few more days on the kitchen counter.

Thanks. I picked up (ordered) some of these and haven't had one yet and was wondering how they were.

Really good QPR for what we paid. [yahoo.gif]

I've had an inspiration and realized that the tart peaches I noted were actually gummi peaches. I buy them in the airport now and again as I'm about to board a long flight.
