There are Port & Douro wine tastings that will take place in the East Coast later in the year.

Since you are inquiring about it, I'll try to get a summary of all the Portuguese Wine Tastings taking place this year in the USA and will then posted that info on this forum as well :ftlop2014:

Please do, and thank you Mario! I doubt there will be one in my area, but with enough notice I might travel to one.

Mario,
Is this listed somewhere on their website or somewhere else? Do you know what is being poured next week at the Los Angeles tasting?

Andy -

On the best of my knowledge, those Wines Listed here for the SF tasting are not posted on any other website.

Concerning the LA tasting, let me find out whether the Wines are available to post as well. If so, I'll update the thread for LA tasting then :-)

Thks

The IVDP San Francisco Event was held at the venerable Palace Hotel yesterday. We arrived shortly before the end of the trade session and perused the well produced brochure explaining the basics of Port wine. As I looked around at those attending the crowd was definitely older, not the 20-30 something set. More 40-60+. Also as I watched the room fill to capacity, it appeared many knew each other from the trade. I would have preferred a slightly bigger room as it was very difficult to get around to the tables and it got warm. Trying to talk to the representatives took patience as well, they were just swamped. Canapes were passed around by hotel staff, a nice tasty touch. Cafe tables were also present, very handy for taking notes. I wasn't able to do formal notes, but more of my impressions on whether I would look for a wine in the future. The first table we came to was...

Quevedo, They have no distributor in California as of yet, so not available .

1996 Colheita, it seemed a bit muddled to me, short finish, lack of depth. N/S (nothing special)
2011 LBV, fresh fruity nose, blackberry leather with decent structure and finish. Drinking very nice now. Full cork, semi-filtered. Buy
30YO White Port, oh I wish there was more in my glass. Very light style, almost rose in color. Delicate, fruity, I tried to grab a bottle :Naughty:

Quinta do Crasto

2013 Douro Reserva Old Vines, Young, decent enough. N/S
2011 LVB Sweeter style, kinda simple, perhaps needs a few more years? N/S

Quinta De Honor 20yo Tawny, Rosemary medicine nose. Very light aromatics strong lemon and acidity. Not a lot of bottom end (caramel type stuff). A different take on 20yo.

Niepoort 1999 Colheita WOW! Toasted coconut caramel popcorn with good acidity. I tried this right after the Quinta de Honor and it wasn't a fair fight. Find this, buy some.

One corner of the room was getting more attention than the others and you could hear the buzz about Mario's wines and that Feuerheerd was indeed pouring a 1934

Porto S. Leonardo Ayesha Trump, a very nice representative, thanks.

20 Anos, Shows very cleanly, nice acidity, different than what I'm used to but I think I could grow to like it.
30 Anos, This was one of my top wines of the night. Great complexity, layers of flavors, I would take this over the 40 Anos
40 Anos, I was glad just to be able to taste this, however small the pour was. Still enough to get a decent impression. Very intense, woody, a bit earthy, long finish.

Feuerheerd

1975 Colheita, A bit of a lightweight. A funky nose, perhaps a bit of VA? Not going to compete against the Kopke for sure.
1963 Colheita, Homerun! thick, luxurious and tasty. Dark chocolate covered caramel popcorn, with a hint of hard candy. In the Top 3 of the night.
1934 Colheita, a whiff, a sip, and it's gone. Sweet deliciousness and a marvelous experience. Still I'd buy the '63 and alas the 1947 was not available for tasting at that moment.

A very nice event, thanks IVDP!

A late addition, the location was perfect for public transit. Too bad the ride home on BART required SRO and packed in like sardines.

That was with Quevedo's 30yr White Porto.
I think I get the feeling.
