Cockburn 1960 was my drink this weekend. Smooth, mature and delicious.

At a 50th year old birthday (not the actual day) with a member from my club. 4 people and some very interesting ports.

First 3 were served open

1976 Warre's LBV. Mature, mellow and pleasant to drink. Lacks a little depth and a tad of spirits on the finish.
1969 Dow's Reserve. Darker than expected and with good amount of spice.
1963 Romariz Colheita. Very developed and with a blonde hue. very sweet and lacks the necessary acidity to counterbalance.

Second 2 were served 100% blind.

1. A tawny. Very creamy with a dark colour. Excellent acidity and depth of flavour. Top notch stuff. I guess 1988 Romaneira colheita. Was in fact a Wiese & Krohn 30 Anos bottled in 2013. This is just an amazing wine that could best quite a few 40 year old tawnies.

2. A white. Little lackluster in body, but good amount of acidity. Very clean and controlled wine that tastes of more though I find it strange that there is not more honey or exotic fruit on the palate. I guessed 30 Anos Devesa White. Was in fact 40 Anos Kopke White.

Over the course of a dinner party at home at the weekend:

Quinta Santa Eufemia 30 Year Old White
Ferreira 1960 VP
Dow's 1980 VP
Quinta do Cotto Grande Escolha 1994
Quinta da Leda Tinto 2011 (Magnum)

The ports showed quite nicely. The Grande Escolha retains good acidity and tannic structure, though I thought the fruit a touch faded; the Leda was superb, though I will probably let the remaining bottles sit in the cellar for another couple of years before drinking another one.

1997 Porto Souza VP. A little sweet, a little spicy and slightly hot. It smelled of blueberries and possibly blackberries. It has a nice mouthfeel and drinks well but I think I'll hold my other bottle for a few more years.

Croft 1970 - a leaking bottle that I found in my wine fridge that was unfortunately quite oxidised

An unknown Cockburn which was identified from the cork branding as 190?, and I think the ? was a 4; accompanied by a bottle of Quinta do Noval 1931. The former was evolved and beautiful, the latter chunky and big (so big as to be guessed by an expert palate as Fonseca 1966).

After returning Sunday from a wonderful trip to Japan I promptly got sick. Been sick all week. Finally starting to feel better and went to my offsite yesterday and discovered a leaking 1985 Dow’s VP. Opened it last night.

Had a few over the weekend:

1970 Cockburn VP - Nothing Special, had an aspirin tastes
1966 Sandeman VP- Pretty taste. Nice body to it. Served by itself
1982 Rocha Colheita - Nice go to for a colheita with touch of VA
1985 Warre's VP - had some bottle stink or cork funk to it. Bottle did not get to breathe as long as I would've liked.

Was a pop and pour unfortunately. I couldn't imagine it opening up into something great. I am fan of the '63 Cockburn and had high hopes on the '70. I can't recall if I had ever tried the '70 before.

1994 Ramos Pinto Vintage - started as pop and pour. Day 3 really showed off its stuff. Incredibly smooth, elegant and has that RP taste.

If it's not a one night port, I have been opening newer stuff.
