NV Adega de Favaios Monge 20 years tawny

Post by Rune EG »

Early June this year Emmy and I visited Adega de Favaios in order to learn more about their moscatel production. Favaios is located fairly close to the town Alijo, both of them within the Douro region. To our surprise they have started to produce port wines. It was basic ruby, basic tawny and basic white. Lately also 10 yrs tawny and 20 yrs tawny. We purchased the 20 yrs tawny in order to find out more about that product.

50 cl. Bottled 2021. 19,5 % alc. Decanted 1 hr, which was OK, but will benefit one more hour in the decanter. Dark brown colour. Much darker than most 20 yrs tawnies that I have tasted. We agreed that the real age of this 20 yrs Monge must be between 20 yrs and 30 yrs tawny. Somewhat subdued aroma, consisting of especially wood and minerals. Medium to full body. Taste is rather powerful, and again dominated by wood and minerals. Nice acidity/sweetness-balance. Well-made 20 yrs tawny. The style is on the dry side. Rough towards the end. 88 pts.
