1965 Messias Vintage Port

Post by Derek T. »

My birthday port 8)

I had planned on opening a Tarylor's Vargells 1965 to celebrate my birthday yesterday but found my single bottle of Messias 1965 to be leaking so picked that instead.

The cork was extremely wet and broke in half as soon as I applied upward pressure. The piece that was left in the neck then crumbled into 1,000 pieces. No amount of glue was going to save the situation but, luckily, the top half of the cork has enough branding on it to recognise what it is. Phew!

The wine decanted cleanly off a huge amount of black gunk. The colour had more red in it that I had expected but was very tawny looking. The mouthfeel was reasonably thick on entry but then weakend quickly in the mouth. The predominent tastes were oranges and caramel with no red fruit to speak of. A short to medium length finish with too much heat for me.

To be honest, I did not have high hopes for this bottle (a leaker from a very bad year and a shipper not really known for their VP) and it lived up to expectation. That said, it is now a respectable tawny and I will drink the remainder of the bottle chilled to see if it works better that way.

As a VP this is a 2-1

I can't wait to try my Vargells 65 in 12 months time

Well Happy Birthday!! Too bad to hear that this one didn't fare so well... Hopefully the Taylor's lives up to the hype next year!

I think I did this an injustice last night. I forgot to chill it tonight (as I had planned to) so gave it a go out of the decanter - WOW

All the heat has gone, as has the burnt sugar and citrus orange flavours. This is now a very respectable tawny. Nice weight, very smooth and warming. Good tawny characteristics, nutty caramel flavours and an impressive long finish.

I must track down a Messias aged tawny or Colhieta

Derek,

So a 24 hour plus decanting enhanced it. I believe some say no more than 12 hours!

Derek,

I have seen this scenario a number of times, and wonder if there is a predictable pattern -

- A weak, old, tired wine - such as a Delaforce '50 that I tackled a year or so back -

- Looking a little murky in the decanter, showing a matt magenta colour

First impression is 'over the hill, - should have been drunk ages ago'

But then, after a couple of days in decanter, it comes round and presents very much better.

- does this pattern fit your bottle?

Tom,

Very much so. Conventional wisdom would suggest that this fragile old VP from a suspect year should be a "pop 'n' go" experience with very little decanter time.

This wine definately improved over 24 hours. No one will ever know how good it might have been after 48 hours

I think there is a lesson here. Anyone who opens an old VP that seems over the hill should leave some for tomorrow and see what happens.

All I can tell you is that this bottle improved by at least 100% - as a VP it is still down in the 2-1 range but as a PORT it is now up in the 5-4 territory
