Curiosity with WOW

I am finishing off a brief piece for the newsletter (FTLOP #124) on the project in Gaia known as World of Wine, and was wondering what your feedback is for those of you that visited the museums or dined at the restaurants there?

I’ve visited two “exhibits” and dined once.

Food service took forever and was rather lukewarm when it arrived. My understanding is all food comes from one kitchen. Which would explain. Never went back for food again.

The “exhibits” were ok, I guess. But since it’s your own pace with mostly wall reading it’s hard to keep one’s attention after a while. And if others present, as happened once, it’s hard to progress without missing something solely to get around people.

I’d say it’s decent for your basic tourist with little to no port/wine knowledge. Rather pedestrian for someone more knowledgeable.

*I should add. The chocolate “exhibit” could have been 1/2 as long and still conveyed the same information. A small bit of port (Bin 27 IIRC) at the end was the best part.

I think that I have eaten at 2 of the restaurants, and have visited 3 or 4 of the museums. Kari has independently visited 2 museums and had lunch at 1 of the restaurants.

My take is similar to Andy's. The restaurants are fine. Neither great nor awful. The food definitely has potential, but the fact that it all comes from one central kitchen does seem to delay things and cause it to sometimes only be warm, not hot.

The only museums that have repeat potential for me are Adrian's glass collection and the chocolate museum. The others are interesting once, but at least for me don't really have enough there to need a second visit. They seem to be decent introductions to their topics, or perhaps as much as early-intermediate, but there's not a lot of depth to them. At least to me. (Other than Adrian's glass collection, which is pretty amazing.)

I've been to most of the museums. The chocolate may be the one I'm missing. The Bridge collection is, by far my favorite. I went twice.

I don't think WOW was actually meant as a draw for Port lovers. The majority of people who come to Porto, or visit Gaia are not necessarily Port aficionados. Of course some are. But most are just Port-curious and not geeks like us. That said, I have visited 4 museums and enjoyed them, some more than others. Cork museum will be interesting to people with a mere basic understanding of wine or even those more serious.

For those that like Live Fado and some other live entertainment shows, those are now available too. Of the four WOW restaurants I have visited so far, my favorite was the 1828 Steakhouse, but all the meals I've had, some quite casual, have been worthwhile. I don't know that these are meant to compete with the top restaurants in the area, but there is a great diversity of dining destinations there, that if visiting WOW, there are some nice options just a small distance from the majority of the museums. Outside on the main plaza/terrace during the good weather, there is some diverse music, great sights, and they make a TOP notch White Sangria and a more familiar version, which was also very good.

During inclement weather, or even warm sunny days, there is fun stuff to see and do. Everybody coming to Gaia for their first time, should visit for a full, or half day, before getting serious about Port visits.

I am very glad that FTLOP users, now have the availability of a discount, that was provided in the most recent newsletter ... extended for the full year of 2026.

Just in my limited walkthroughs of it before the tour this year, it seemed like a good way to both tie the neighborhood together for folks that didn't want to just go producer to producer. I know I don't mind that at all (nor do most of the Port nerds here), but I agree most people need some variety in their experience. I didn't eat there at all, but I did grab a drink on the one patio area which was good with a good view. All in all, seemed like a good and pretty comprehensive way to get people to stay around the lodges for a full day and dive deeper into Port without the producers all needing to provide all those other aspects of entertainment and hospitality individually themselves.

I’ve eaten at 3 of the restaurants at WoW and I’ve been perfectly happy with the food. As Roy says, the food offering is mid-market and works well on that basis. The big advantage the WoW restaurants offer is that they aren’t busy so if you’re not well organised and need somewhere to eat at short notice, you have a good chance of finding a table.

But that’s also their big disadvantage — they are often so quiet that there’s no atmosphere.

I’ve also visited 3 of the museums: The Bridge Collection (I spent nearly a whole day there on my first visit!), the Chocolate Museum (one visit is enough) and the History of Porto (absolutely fascinating - I need to go back!). On my next visit to Porto I’ll try to go to the Atkinson Museum, just to see what it’s about.
