1995 Porto Souza Vintage Port

Post by Glenn E. »

Opened for a book club which read Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, in which Vintage Port plays a role in forming connections between characters.

Color: medium dark red tending toward burgundy and/or brick. Not opaque, but pretty dense.

Nose: ripe red fruits - some raspberry, definitely some red currant, possibly some strawberry. There are some deeper notes implying some underlying purpleness, but they don't completely surface on their own and instead just provide complexity and depth.

Palate: very red, somewhat jammy, and a slightly sour twang that feels like VA even though I detected none on the nose. Something seems off, but it isn't clear what. Red currant, unripe strawberry (but not green), and a note something like red vines candy.

Score: 88 points. I have opened many of these and usually score them higher, so there may in fact have been something slightly off about this bottle.

These do have varying amounts of VA so that could very well be the issue.
