1991 Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

Post by Erik Wiechers »

Ok,
this is my first publishing note so please be gentle.

I decanted the wine at 4:30 PM, the smell of cassis and ripe fruit immediately hit my nose, a full sweet smell. with blackberries, leather, rose-hips and violets. A promising start. The colour is very purple, almost black.

7:30 PM
Me and my friend tasted the first glass. Wow, what a rich treat. A firm rich wine with a balanced structure with lots of fruit and tannins and nice acids.
We had mascarpone and gorgonzale on crackers to go with it and enjoyed a nice summer evening.

9:30 PM
We emptied the bottle and it looks like the taste is getting stronger but sweeter as time slips away.

Luckily i am still able to buy a case of 0,375 litres for € 21,50 a bottle so that is what i am going to do next. This wine has still some years ahead of it and i do think the taste will develop more.

i give it a 90/100 now.

Thanks for this TN Erik, I have a bottle of this at home in the cellar and am looking forward to having it in a few (5-10) years.

Eric,

Congrats on your first posting of a tasting note. Very well done indeed. I like this wine and would be surprised if it did not improve over six to ten hours of decanting time. It is such a bargain as I wrote recently a thread devoted to the 1991 Vintage Ports. You may want to put a note in that thread (in the PORT FORUM) that links to this TN. Thanks and once again, nice to have your first TN posted here on the FTLOP!
