Taylor 40 Year Old Tawny
This is a bottle purchased at Taylor's in 2000. I've been waiting to turn 40 to open it. It is one of those products that is completely mis-priced by our local monopoly. Currently it sells for a whoping 241$ CAD, when it sells for 155$ CAD elsewhere in the country and ranges 110-160 in the USA.
First I say that I've only had one other 40 year old tawny before so not much to compare with. It was a Sandeman 40 limited edition aniversary bottle (Thanks Fred).
Ok so color is 2 shades darker than sauterne. Lovely color, it is a wonder that port even comes in this color when it started ink back.
The fist pour, the oak is the main scent and the taste is alchool and caramel.
A few hours later and same for 24 hours later. The alchool is now tame and the caramel standsout. This stuff drinks itself! So smooth and sweet but not the usual Port "sweet" of some LBVs, because of the spice and nuts blended into the caramel, maybe even dark sugar.
My wife also added "it doesn't scratch on the way down even it is strong in alchool. It's like they added brown sugar, wow what caramel".
Of all the old twanies, I've had (mostly 10, 20 and a few 30s) my previous top of class was the old production run of Burmester 30 Tordiz. Now unfortunatley replaced by a more common production. But this taylor I could certainly have more often and it makes to my personal top 10.
cheers
Paul
