1963 Mackenzie’s Vintage Port -- Finest Reserve

Post by Roy Hersh »

1963 Mackenzie’s Finest Reserve Vintage Port – This was a recent and generous gift from a friend, which I decided to open for New Year’s Eve. Rusty-orange color with some bricking ruby in the center and a tawny-light pink edge. From the get go I knew I was at least five years too late and maybe more. It was at its best about a half hour after decanting. My daughter decanted this and I made my first note right away and followed it for the next 24 hours. High-toned accents of eucalyptus, pine, cherry cough drops, soy and a solid dose of spirit. Medium in body weight, the best part of this VP was the texture, which was very smooth, dense and round. This Mackenzie is past its prime and evokes a sense of elaborate secondary flavors -- toffee, Grand Marnier, panetone and butterscotch. Had it not been for the distracting hot spirituous aftertaste, this would have been a lot more enjoyable. Drink up if you own ‘em. 84 points ~ (12/31/07)

Sorry to hear that '63 Mackenzie is a little past its prime. I do have some of this in my cellar - it may be time to pop 'em open!
