1970 Dow's Vintage Port

Post by Andy Velebil »

From Magnum

This was a very generous gift from Rupert Symington for our stop at the Quinta (Vesuvio), after all what better way to end a great tasting and dinner than with this. I can't thank Rupert enough, as this was my first VP from a magnum. This was only decanted about 3 1/2 hours before drinking and although it didn't hit its peek, as a longer decant would have been better, it was still a solid drink.

Really dark for a 70's, looks like a mid-80s VP. A bit spirity on the nose right now with some mineral notes, spice, vanilla, and cherry. Very smooth on the initial palate with smokey plums, strawberries, vanilla, tannins/acid are still very well balanced. It was marred only by a touch of heat on the finish. 94+ points.

Of course that was not the only VP we drank at dinner after our great stop at Quinta do Vesuvio. But what happens in the Douro, stays in the Douro. you will just have to go on a trip and find out for yourselves.

It seems like just yesterday we enjoyed that bottle after one memorable day visiting Quinta de Vargellas and the Robertson's and then heading to Vesuvio for the full vertical and then treading in the lagares. The boatride and band of Douro won't soon be forgotten either.

Imagine how it would have shown had the '70 Dow Mag had more time in a decanter?!?!

Thanks for the deja vu. :winepour:
