The 1970 Fonseca was fresh and vibrant in the glass with a heavy fruit nose and dark garnet color. It was perfectly balanced on the palate with hints of blackberry, dark cherry, and date. Three hours later it developed a caramelized sugar smell and smooth refined taste of fruit and caramel that was simply wonderful.

Vintage Port just does not get all that much better than this. At its best the 1970 Fonseca is the top (besides Nacional) VP of the vintage. That said, it is also one of the truly great bottlings in the past 50 years!
Every time I open or drink the '70 Fonseca, I am blown away by the extraordinary hedonism, purity of fruit and symmetry that I experience. One can never have enough 1970 Fonseca in the cellar. I'd rather have them in the cellar than the old 100 point rated 1977 Fonseca which can be somewhat less consistent and rarely have I found it to deliver the same caliber of pleasure as the '70. But that is just me and YMMV.
I agree ..this Port is more like the 100 pointer that WS gave to the 1977..I just recently picked up another case of this and have been trying to go heavy on this over the '77.
It is however getting harder and harder to find the '70 at a reasonable price!
