Quintas to visit in/near Pinhao

Post by Glenn E. »

I'm taking my parents to Portugal this fall and we'll be staying in Pinhao at Quinta de la Rosa for 4 nights. I'd like to get a better idea of what's available in the area as far as Quintas is concerned so that we can plan to visit some of them.

I know that Noval is just barely up the Pinhao river from the town, and if I remember corectly Roeda is right across the Douro. Foz is right on the west edge of town. Vargellas, Malvedos, and Vesuvio are all up river but should easily be within driving distance. Panascal is down river.

Are there any others I should know about?

Glenn there is a Quinta almost every 100 meters around Pinhao. Crasto and Corte have some great terraces to see, Bomfin is big and quite near Pinhao, Carvalhas is quite nice and has great point of view on the Douro/Pinhao.

The best is to look at the map of the Hugh Johnson atlas, you see all of them, or most.

Glenn,

Some of the Quinta's are open to visitors and some require an appointment, especially during harvest, so it is best to call them ahead of your trip so that they know you are coming.

There are some, like Quinta do Bomfim, that Fred mentioned, that you won't get into ... even if you call ahead. They don't give appointments to the public there. Not a ton to see at that specific Quinta anyway, it is more a place to relax and hang out. I am sure you'll want to be a bit more active.
