30 Year Old Tawny Port by Presidential

Post by Glenn E. »

I had a glass of this after a hearty meal at a very nice little Italian restaurant in Tacoma on Saturday. I didn't take notes at the time, but wanted to put up a TN anyway.

I think the bottle had probably been open for a couple of weeks, if not more, because the nose seemed a bit off. Not in a bad way, really, but there just wasn't much there beyond the normal dried apricots and figs. It's entirely possible that the aromas of Italian food wafting throughout the restaurant simply covered everything up, too. The color seemed darker than I would normally expect from a 30-yr old - more in line with a 20-yr old. But that might have been the restaurant lighting.

The taste was pleasant and smooth, with just a hint of honeycomb and butterscotch. There was a lot of heat - bordering on being able to taste the alcohol - but it wasn't harsh. I didn't spend a lot of time checking the finish because there was dessert to be consumed!

The Port paired very well with a creamy dark chocolate torte... but not so well with the tiramisu, which was too sweet.
