The appearance of this wine in the glass is inky black which is consistent from the center to the meniscus. The nose is very closed - not giving up much at all. On the palate I noticed some tar, licorice and something else....I'm thinking vanilla. The spirit is not integrated at all at this point and is quite distracting. After one hour in the decanter, the spirit has integrated nicely and the wine has softened up quite a bit. The nose is still closed and palate has not evolved over the past hour. At the 18 hour mark, there hasn't been much change at all in the characteristics of this wine. This wine is pleasant enough, but not a blockbuster by any means. For a single quinta wine from an "off" year I'd say that it deliveried pretty much as expected.
