1984 Dow's LBV Port

Post by Kris Henderson »

Bottled in 1989 (edit added my moderator)
I saw this for sale and thought it would be interesting. The color is ruddy and cloudy. It looks like the t-cork has held up well over the last 19 years but there is a small amount of oxidation on the nose. There's also some figs and dried cherries. On the palate, the tannins are completely integrated. It's smooth and lush and moderately sweet but has a bitter edge to it. Low acidity. Medium weight. Finishes with some alcohol and a flavor that makes me think of bourbon. Clearly past its prime but it has been fun to drink and an educational experience.

You know, it is fun to try these types of "experiments" as there is always something to learn. I just found some fine old LBV during my trip to Portugal and bought it for the exact same reason. I can't wait to get around to opening it up. Sooner rather than later of course!
