20 Year Old Tawny Port by Niepoort

Post by Glenn E. »

9/24/08 by the glass from the bar at the Pestana Porto

Medium tawny in color
Candied fruit - maybe dates? - on the nose. Also some marzipan.
Creamy and smooth in the mouth. Slight overtone of processed sugar, otherwise very neutral.
Short finish, but very even. Some citrus.

So where would this fit in your "rankings" of the 20 year old Ports that you tried. Again ... was this a fresh bottle from what you could sense?

I think that the Niepoort probably would have slotted in betwen the Taylor and the Sandeman for me. The Calem and Rozes were decent Tawnies, but really nothing to write home about. And I find the Sandeman to be too bright and lively, so the Niepoort's softer citrus tones probably would have placed it 2nd.

And no, it wasn't a fresh bottle. Just guessing, but it was probably a week or two old. It wasn't showing any obvious signs of deterioration to me, so I don't think it could have been open for a month or more.
