1977 Gould Campbell Vintage Port

Decanted 6 hours. Amazingly dark color. Stunning nose. Just soars from the glass. Huge entry. Seems like it's going to be totally oversized, then brought into control by solid acid and tannin. Super long finish. Still lots of grip in the finish. Wow! This is an amazing wine! I would have guessed 1991. Hard to believe that this is a 1977. This is a port for the ages -- it will certainly outlive me. Is this the best 1977? It sure gives Taylor serious competition. 96 Points!

I agree with your assessment and have always preferred this to the Smith Woodhouse which others love from 1977. That Port is also very good and every bit as dark in extraction. I prefer the Gould and by a landslide. I prefer the Taylor, but otherwise this is as solid as anything else I've had from the '77 vintage.

Agreed. The Smith Woodhouse is not in the same league. However, love of the Smith have told me that it was better and is now closing up. We shall see!

I prefer the Taylor

I also prefer the Taylor, but only from stong bottles. Overall, for me the Taylor has been less consistant than this wine. Of course the CG isn't perfect either, the 1977 G-C has a higher level of corked bottles. All IMHO of course.
