1957 Kopke Colheita Port

Post by Brian C. »

Tasted 11/19/09

I had only one glass at the Gage in downtown Chicago. I paired it with a dessert that featured a few different mousses, a cherry gelee, a chocolate crust, and pistachios. The pairing was absolutely perfect. I wish every dessert could be like this. The Kopke itself went down very smoothly, with a wonderful finish. I have not had many colheitas, though I knew going in that this one was special from all that I had read. It certainly lived up to all the hype, anyway, and it always feels great to nail a pairing down as I did there.

Very nice, Brian. That's a fantastic Colheita, and I can't believe you found it by the glass in a restaurant!

If you don't mind my asking, what did they charge you for a glass? At the current bottle price, it seems like it would have to have been at least $40!

Congrats Brian, a stellar Colheita from my birth year. One of my all-time favorite 1957s. Great to find on a wine list. I hadn't opened a bottle of this since the summer, when Oscar was visiting. Always a great treat.

Thanks, guys. Glenn, it was $35, for the record. Considering what I've seen offered for that price by the glass before, I thought I did alright. I looked online to see what a bottle retails for, and I did see a website that was offering $150, though I had to wonder if that was a half bottle offering. I can't imagine that bottle is still there if that was really true. A number of sites were offering a bottle for $300-400, thought I might have seen a bottle for $200. One thing that amazes me about port is the wide range of pricing out there for a given selection. Roy, I'd be proud to have something like that from my birth year. I haven't run across anything from 1969 before, alas.
