2007 Quinta do Vesuvio Capela Vintage Port

Post by Derek T. »

Floral nose. Quite aggressive with great levels of fruit and tannin. Not a lot of obvious acidity. This is the third time I have tasted the Capela 07 and it has gone from being a wine that initially appeared softer and lighter than the standard Vesuvio bottling to being the "bigger" wine of the two. It will be extremely interesting to see how this wine will develop in the years to come and even more interesting to see what happens to the brand and the evolution of the price differential for future vintages and in the secondray market. My guess is that the 30% differential quoted by Johnny will apear to be very good value in 5 years time

Tasted here on 23rd February 2010.

I think this was also my third time trying this, it has certainly become a lot bigger wine than when I first tried it in June last year. On the back of the tasting I have tried to buy some more, sadly it seems to be totally sold out everywhere! On the back of this tasting I can see why! I think the pricing was correct for the initial launch as the amount of information on the wine was very limited, would I pay more for it now, certainly Yes. Any sellers?

There are a few listings for it in the U.S., but at about twice the cost of the regular 2007 Quinta do Vesuvio. The regular stuff runs $60, but the Capela is listed at $115 and $120. So it sounds like it is more than 30% better, or worth that at least to see. Is it worth 100% more?

That depends on your definition of "worth". This is an excellent VP, made in very small quantity and specifically designed to be a premium product/ If the evaluation is purely on taste and immediate gratification then 30% is probably reasonable. But if you factor in the "special" nature of the product it is probably worth spending more to have the experience of tasting it.
