1938 Niepoort Garrafeira Port

Post by SEAN C. »

The 1938 Niepoort Garrafeira was one bottle I had never seen before and probably will not see again. The label declared that the contents were “bottled in 1943 and decanted in 1977”, which makes some sense because the 1940 Niepoort Garrafeira was “bottled in 1945 and decanted in 1979”. The bottle shape betwen the two Garrafeira's were totaly different however. In the glass the wine was a light golden brown and orange color mixed with yellow and a hint of pink. The nose was primarily of toffee and Madeira. In the mouth were stong tastes of sugary butterscotch, very little fruit was evident on the palate. Overall the 1938 Niepoort was still very good but probably past it’s prime.

Tasting date: December 4, 2009
Decanting time 1 hour

My first Niepoort Garrafeira. And the 1938 was a great place to start my Garrafeira journey.
Decanted 5 hours prior to drinking. And the port kept devoloping throughout the night.
The nose exceptionel long and breathtaking. The color very bright in the glass. An explosion of taste, lasting 10 seconds.
I know that Sean had a similar bottle 6 years ago, and jugded it past its prime.
This bottle was still on the plateau.

Allan,
I split this out into it's own TN so the Database picks it up in a search easier. Glad you enjoyed it, they are wonderful Ports!
