1997 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port
Dark burgundy color. The nose is quite expressive with a dominant earthy/musky spice complimented by cherry and ripe dark berry notes. Well developed on the palate with a lighter bodied, tart cherry and boysenberry fruit profile, good complexity, very smooth tannins and good balance. The length of finish is on the moderate side but is smooth and pleasant. 88/89pts, Tasted 1/09

How long of a decant did you give this, if any? I much preferred it on the second day, so I think (no surprise really), that a long decant is called for.

Eric,
This note was taken just a short time before I began to record decant times in my tasting notes, but based on my MO from that period (consuming a bottle with my ex-girlfriend in a single night) I'd estimate that this was probably given a few hours to breathe and then finished off over the next 6 hours or so - perhaps not the optimum method for assessing a VP, but certainly more thorough than a "pop 'n pour" I would think.
