TN: 2001 LBV Port

Post by Al B. »

Decant: 0 hours - Bottled 2007. Deep plummy red, slight purple on the rim. Nose of raspberries and loganberries, fruity and inviting. A touch of peppercorns. Bland entry, bringing sweetness in the mid-palate and then an unbalanced alcoholic attack. Masses of tannins give a dry mouthfeel and an enormous acidity makes this painful to hold in the mouth for any length of time. But the aftertaste is very pleasant - creamy chocolate sauce poured over strawberries. This came across as a perfectly decent LBV but probably needs a year in the bottle to acquire a better balance. Today this rates 1/3 on Tom's scale.

After 30 minutes the acidity was still too dominant but the aftertaste had changed to a very long, sweet cherry memory that lingers in the mouth for several minutes. The aftertaste is great, its just a pity about the mouthfeel that needs to be suffered before the aftertaste can be enjoyed. 83 points
