1970 Warre Vintage Port

Post by Claus R »

Decanted 4 hours:

Appearence: A light wine to look at, and also pour...reminds me of 'Ribena' blackcurrant juice when pouring. Otherwise I'd compare it to a very light table wine in appearence.

Nose: First out of the bottle before decanting it was MASSIVE! Red fruits by the truckloads, now 4 hours later it's still fruity but alchohol is coming through as well, but is very multi layered - think maybe the nose as become more colheita-styled as it's gotten som airtime (don't worry I not throwing it around ) I'm also finding something I would describe as cask notes as from an old whisky. (I'm a big whisky drinker as well)

Taste: Mid-palate arrival, strawberries - alot! think some may find it a little hot? I find it drying... maybe some licorice, also thinking maybe converting your mum's cookie jar to a taste, (Vanilla?)

Finish: Long, ...yeah, well Loooong, the fruits/grapes lingering, sugars hanging on, coating the mouth, goes on and on and...on

Comments: When I uncorked this one, the cork was wet 3/4 through and I thougt I'd lost it and the first nose dip into the bottle said cork, but fortunatly this was not the case :-) Cork also crubled 2/3's down upon extraction, but managed to get the rest out by gently applying the cork srew again. Also alot of depót in this one...the teafilter filled up nicely

I may be a bit biased here as this is my first real old Vintage Port [d_training.gif] but I'll give it a score of 93/100 - Could drink this all night (and probably will, although my girlfriend's helping me a bit  )

Regards,
Claus

Back in the 1990s and early into this decade too, I was never a fan of the 1970 Warre and felt it was one of their weakest links between 1963 and 2000 for a generally declared VP. I kept noticing that some people here really loved this Port, guys with palates that I hold in v. high esteem. So I scratched my head an bought one to try. It was three years ago and I gave it a 90. Funny thing is, I've had it twice since then (where the heck are my notes) and both times thought to myself, they were far better than I remembered. Then again, both were in tastings while visiting the Symington's. Thanks for your impression!
