2005 Croft Quinta da Roeda Vintage Port

Post by John M. »

My wife got this for me for my birthday and we drank it with friends at dinner.

Decanted 24 hours. The color was a dark, dense purple and it seems a little more viscous than most. Smells of mashed red ripe fruits (but no berries)--plums, dark cherry, etc. but I couldn't distinguish the fruit. The taste picked up on the aromas--a bit of heat that was a little at odds with the wine--plus it seemed a little spicy. Medium finish that was fruity but evolved into a dry, almost dusty quality. I really enjoyed it, yet it seemed as though it could be better (needs to be cellared for a few years?).

48 hours: One glass + left which I enjoyed while grilling the next day. The heat has toned down a little. Not as much nose--but the taste is similar. A spicy quality, sort of like when you bite an orange rind--bitter yet fruity.

Overall, this was fun to drink. I think I'll buy another or two and cellar them for a few years so I can compare. Good potential here.
