1977 Dow's Vintage Port

Post by Frederick Blais »

My last bottle to share with a friend who's leaving the office.

It was probably the best bottle I had in the last 5 years, I acquired this bottle 2 years ago. The cork was in great shape, I was woundering if it has been recorked even though there was no mention on it. The color was clear garnet, nose so complex just like the bottle of perfume that his Vintage has used us to in the past years, flavours of fresh flowers, licorice, dried plums, tobaco, cedar box and cinnamon. On the palate, everything is integrated, still great depth, concentration that gives that velvety touch on the palate. Flavours are similar to the nose, mostly secondary flavours with dried red fruits, the cinamon is really kicking in on the finish along with the tobacco. A really great bottle that will have to trouble tasting that good for a couple more decades! 18.5/20

If only I had more like this!

Great to read this was able to show just how good this Port can be. Sadly this Port, like many other 1977's, suffers from poor corks that affect the overall enjoyment so I love hearing about the positive experiences. Thanks for posting it.

Although I have had a couple of experiences during tastings with bottles with TCA, as Andy alluded to, the vast majority of 1977 bottles have been excellent like the one you mention here Fred. I don't know what it would take for that wine to receive a full 19 points from you, but suspect that score for you, is only reserved for Port bottles with the label of Niepoort on it. The score does not match up to your beautiful prose on this wine. Just sayin' ... [foilhat.gif]

This is one of my favorite Ports... .when it's good. An amazing effort from Dow! Thanks for the note Frederick! It's always fun to read when it's a good bottle.
