Great article, Alex! Lots of fun figuring it out.
I had it narrowed down to a small range, then this clue sealed it for me:
This was a year in which the US had two presidents (one of whom was the first Roman Catholic to hold the office)
Given the range of dates I had settled on, there was only one possible answer after that clue.

Glad you enjoyed it. It was a challenge giving enough information to make it possible to guess the year but without giving too much to make it obvious.
I have a number of other things promised to do for other people before I can finish the next article, but I've already started planning it.
