1992 Quinta do Passadouro Vintage Port

Post by Roel B »

Decanted 14/10/2012 - half of the bottle was poured without filtering into a demi (filled up to the cork).

In october 2012, this wine had lots of chemical notes on the nose without any subtility. However, this tasting note is for the port in that half bottle on 3/27/2013. The demi was re-opened on 3/25 (cork saturated and slightly leaking) and has been stored in the fridge for two days prior to this tasting. No decant time, pop-n-pour.

On the eye: In the glass, the first appearance is that of a full, dark-red wine. On closer inspection, the color is brown-red, with an transparant discoloration towards the edges. Some cloudyness.

On the nose: Expressive, very fruity, both secondary and tertiary. Raisins, prune, a hint of raspberry, quince and walnut. Black and dried fruits dominate. Hints of honey, spices (cedar, saffran, some liquorice and truffle). A light note of leather, musk and sweet roasted hazelnut. Great complexity.

On the palate: Good structure and concentration. Acidity: low to medium. Sweetness: high. Alcohol: high, but surrounded by lots of fruit and nicely integrated. Tannins: very smooth, silky. Mid-palate: fresh, fruity, even some orange/lemon notes. Finish: long, sligtly bitter and spicey.

Overall conclusion: Very nice and a lot better than the first half of this bottle in october 2012. Good complexity, depth and balance. Fruit and sweetness dominate. Leave in the bottle 5-10 years or decant and drink now!

Score: 17/20.
