New blend from Barbeito coming
Ricardo Diogo Freitas (managing director and winemaker at Barbeito) will be releasing a new blend as a hommage to his mother. Last night I had a chance to try this wine, a 40 year old Malvasia and it was delicious. I loved his 30 year old blend (which was a hommage to his grandfather) and the quality here is similar, but with a slightly different palate. There are more bass notes, as opposed to the treble of the 30 year blend. This is darker, richer and deeper, with wines from the 1800s blended in. Not as filigree as the 30 year old, but superb balance. No idea what the pricing will be, but I will be on the lookout for it.

Considering the price difference between the 20 year and the 30 year, I wouldn't be surprised to see the 40 year around $200. Whatever it is, considering how much I like the 30 year, I'll have to get some of the new blend.

Given how much I've enjoyed the 30-year blend, this sounds like a must-buy.

1) price = EUR 140,- ex cellarsGary Banker wrote:Considering the price difference between the 20 year and the 30 year, I wouldn't be surprised to see the 40 year around $200. Whatever it is, considering how much I like the 30 year, I'll have to get some of the new blend.
2) had the chance to taste this 2 months ago and thought that this to be a great blend. It is competitively priced (I wouldn't say cheap but not overly expensive either) so I'd guess this will be an option for quality seekers (although it is no Frasqueira).
I for one think that the paper label kind of decreases this great effort a little bit and that with stencelling this Madeira would also show the higher intrinsic value that it possesses.

140 euros = $189.58 (according to www.xe.com). I'll certainly buy some when it becomes available. I think that these older blends have to some extent become a similar choice as the old soleras were.

And here a picture of the bottle without the label but a few other bottles around it.
