1970 Grahams Vintage Port

Post by Eric Menchen »

Oporto bottled. Tonged this bottle around 3 p.m. for consumption around 8 p.m. as I recall. I didn't take notes at the time, so this note is from memory.

Still fairly red in color in the decanter with nice aromas. Tasted very much like a Grahams to me on the first evening, decently sweet with a little warmth, nicely integrated. Some berry fruit. At this point I would give it at least 90 points. There were just three of us drinking, and I put the leftovers into a clean 12 oz. beer bottle and stoppered it overnight. The next day the color had noticeably changed to much more brown, with just a hint of red hue left. The flavors were wonderful at this point, with quince and fig, getting into the tawny realm. I guess I just really like this over the "standard" Graham. 93-94 points. I could have consumed all that remained on the second evening, but saved a small bit for the next day, at which point it was still nice, but fading. I'll definitely consider a longer decant next time.

BTW, we noticed that the bottle wasn't particularly uniform in thickness around the neck. Check out this photo:

Pretty normal for old Port bottles I've tong'd. I can't say I've tong'd many newer bottles, but I'd assume with modern manufacturing processes they are probably far more uniform in thickness now.

Seems that the cork was a little elevated. Glad it showed well despite that.

Nov auction at Zachys. We each got a case. There was another one that no one bid on (lot 1042), they might still sell it to you. $900 was the min bid plus 21.5% buyers premium.
