Recounting my connection with Mata of Malaga

Post by Roy Hersh »

I received an email today from Patrick Mata. He is a young man and descendent of the Mata family, which was one of the most famous producers of dessert wine, especially Malaga, in the Andalusian area of Spain for 200 years. He had discovered my tasting notes on some of the older bottlings (1920 and some thereafter), that I had written about several years ago.

I enjoy Malaga and Pedro Ximenez (PX) stickies and he has been looking to buy up older bottles from his family's wine company which disbanded in 1970 due to too many members wanting different things from the business. He has located some in Cuba and Russia and now in my cellar as I just happen to still have one old bottle (circa 1934-1940) in my collection, in addition to one exquisite empty bottle of ancient Mata Malaga. We talked for quite awhile and it will be interesting to meet up with him either in NY or when he visits Seattle on business. What a small world as he is in the wine business and his local distributor is a good friend of mine.

I also recommended that he visit: http://www.catavino.net/ since Ryan is such a good guy and maintains one of the great Iberian Peninsula wine websites.

IF anyone reading this should own or know of any Mata dessert wines, please add your information to this thread. THANK YOU!!!
