Different in style from the first. More elegant than powerful.

No kidding. The store sells a lot of H&H too. I've never had a Madeira as good on the bottom half of the price spectrum.

Borges 30 Year Old Malvasia

This was opened and tasted after we'd polished off a Krohn 30 Year Old Tawny Port that I'd had open for a good 4-6 weeks. The Krohn had somehow picked up weight and depth after being open for so long, and was pretty amazing. So I think our impression of this Borges was adversely impacted, which I never would have dreamed could be the case. I saved the Borges for after the Krohn because I figured the opposite would be true - tasting the Borges would make the Krohn less impressive.

Even so, this is a fantastic Malvasia. It seems a tad on the expensive side to me at $120/bottle (currently available at FlickingerWines.com in Chicago if you're interested) but is a fine example of a sweeter Malvasia.

Broadbent 5yo Reserve Madeira - My first madeira was a Valentine's gift from my SO. Opened it a couple of weeks ago and have initially found it to be very raisiny. Need to spend some more time with it.

I was in Madeira a couple of weeks ago and had a wonderful tasting at D'Oliveira's. The line up was:

1993 Boal - Young and sweet. Full bodied. Needs time, but great future - 91+ points
1980 Boal - Young. More complex than the 1993. Delicious and more ready. 92 points
2000 Malavzia - Obvioulsy sweet. Fun to drink . Quite young. Good future ahead. - 91+ points
1990 Malvazia - Loved this wine. Young but in a good space. Full bodied and obviously sweet with really excellent acidity - 93 points
1977 Terrantez - Dry. Very delineated. Hard to taste after the other wines. Really bracing. Very clean. Lot's of lemon/lime. - 91 points
1994 Verdelho - Loved this wine. A brand new release. There is something special/different about this. Very complex, but not too "tweeky" for a Verdelho. I loved it! - 92+ points
1968 Boal - Always a favorite! Thank you Luis! On the dry side for Boal. Very complex. Lots of burnt caramel and lemon. Really fascinating. 94 points.

Very nice!

The last time I was there I was impressed by a number of the 'younger' wines. Many were very full bodied with some fascinating flavors.

How does the 1990 compare to the 1989?

I love the 1989 but can't find it anymore. I still see a few 1990s available at times, so I'm wondering if I should pick some up to replace my almost-gone 1989 supply.

I recommend the 1990. It's maybe not quite as good as the 1989, but I was very happy with the 1990. It's close to the 1989. Also, the 1990 was pop and pour and not tasted over several hours or days. All of us were impressed.

If I have the right one, it looks like you can pick it up online at Sunset Corners Fine Wines & Spirits in Miami. They claim to have worldwide delivery.
