1968 Warre's Colheita Port

Post by Andy Velebil »

bottled in 1997

Found this bottle at a local restaurant I've never been to before. It wasn't on the wine list, but I saw it sitting on the back bar and asked about it. I was told this had originally been opened "A very long time ago." The waitress wasn't sure exactly how long, but indicated at least six or more months. The bottle was about 1/2 full and since it wasn't on the wine list, I asked about the price. After a few phone calls to the owner, I was amazed to find out it was only $12 a glass....so I had to take the chance at that price. A honey brown that was very cloudy with yellowing on the edge. A very waxy nose of maple, like over-waxed old furniture. I was amazed at how bright the acidity still was considering this had been opened such a long time. The mahogany and honey up front was a little dull, with a light touch of coffee and spices that show up on the long finish. Although I can't recall ever having this before, and considering how long this had been open, I'd guess this was probably not the best showing of this...yet this was still very good. I must get back and have more at that price!
