1994 Quinta Vale d'Agodinho Quevedo LBV Port

Two bottles purchased near the quinta in Sao Joao de Pesqueira late Sept. 2001. First bottled tasted Oct 5th, 2001, and was not drinkable. In addition to yeast, there were some strange unknown aromas. Both the taste and the aroma were strongly affected by the spirits, and tasted chemicals and more strange stuff. Probably a bottle that has been affected by heat or some other problem. 60 points
Second bottle waited 9 years and was tasted Aug 18th 2010. In order to help out on the spirits, I decanted the bottle seven hours before tasting. I have never in my 30 years of port interest seen a LBV with so many residues from the grapes. Actually there were more residues than in many vintages. The residues were so small that I had to filter it three times, last time using a coffee filter! Light red clear colour with a brown touch, like a young tawny. Aroma is still overshadowed by the spirits and difficult to detect other contents. The taste was medium body, balanced, unfortunately little fruit left, and also the taste dominated by the spirits. Long after-taste. Drinkable, but on the edge. 79 points.
I have discussed this matter with Roy on beforehand. 1994 is only a few years after Quevedo started with Vintage ports, so that could be the reason. Another reason could be that we simply purchased bottles that had been ruined somewhere on the way to where the sales person were located, and thereby not the fault of the quinta. After what I hear, the products from Quevedo is now at a high level, and I look forward taste their products in October.
