Decant: 3½ hours - Right from decanting it was clear that this was a bottle in superb condition (one of the bottles acquired in May 2008). Deep, dark and opaque with only the slightest hint of age starting to show on the rim. On the nose this wine is full of cherry juice and hints of sage and spicy oregano. Thick and voluptuous in the mouth with a wonderful silkiness that is just so full of dark morello cherry which lifts and parts to show the still fierce tannins and so many layers of subtle flavour that it is impossible to keep track of them all. Mixing air in the mouth with the port just releases more to confuse the tastebuds. The aftertaste is a little hot to start, but this quickly fades to leave a long and lingering tingle that flirts between the tip of the tongue and the inside of the lips and cheeks, while all the time smothering the inside of the mouth with melted black chocolate, chocolate as intensely flavoured and dusty as 100% cocao bean. Amazing port, which will last at least another 30 years yet. And no sign of TCA anywhere! 96 points
