Decant: Pop 'n' pour - Sandeman 3* Ruby Port, believed (by George Sandeman) to have been bottled before 1932 when the Don logo started to be used on the bottles. Slightly cloudy, a very pale brown - almost the colour of butterscotch. A maderised nose, showing caramelised sugar and black treacle. A much more pleasant palate than nose, showing oranges and marmalade and with a quince bitterness. Lively acidity keeps the wine together. A pleasant and lingering aftertaste, full of bitter oranges and of a very good length. Faded and elderly - and surprisingly drinkable. The nose did improve in the glass over a couple of hours and the bottle is now in the Sandeman musuem at Seixo. 83 points
