Decant: Not known - From a 5cl bottle brought back from Vesuvio by Julian Wiseman. This is wine that has an average age of 14 years, made from base wines produced by the Symingtons and topped up each year with wine from the same vintage as the level in the barrel falls through consumption and evaporation.
A warm and deep mahogany in colour. A lovely complex nose full of prunes and stewed plums. I suspect there is some Douro bake in here but it has been well blended so as to offer additional complexity rather than spoiling the wine. Rich and mouthfilling, with the prunes and dates coming through on the tongue and with a series of layers that challenge the senses to separate them out. The aftertaste is a little short but is rich while it lasts. This is wine blended perfectly for its purpose - wine to be shared with the family and by the family. Very nice. 89 points
