My reason for using 11x17, and also for wanting to try to run the circles across the top was to accommodate a dinner plate. After we tasted the Port, I cooked up duck breasts served with a Port-cherry sauce. People could keep drinking what they had left with the dinner. With the Gaia arrangement it was necessary to move the glasses slightly, but you could still keep them arranged and know which was which. I'll post pictures in another thread when I have time.

Very good plan. Next time there is the option of using /TopRow in PermittedPackingStyles.

And please do post in this thread a link to the thread containing the pictures.

Julian,

Is it possible to fit 18 glasses on an 11" x 17" sheet?

Eighteen on /USL2 (= 11″×17″) is uncomfortably tight for INAO glasses, and too small for others. (But, as you might recall, sixteen works.) Why not use three × /USL (= 8½″×11″)?

I just LOVE this chart! Looks like somethings I have made.

It might need updating: I think that /RectangularDislocation and /RectangularDislocationV were implemented subsequently. So the chart might yet gain some extra data.

Ohhhh extra data! :yumyum:

I might have to open up a nice bottle of Port to celebrate that!

Which you could generate yourself from the code.

What should be the default page-ordering in the placemat software?

The current:
  • Person 1
    • Glasses
    • TNs
  • Person 2
    • Glasses
    • TNs
  • Person 3
    • Glasses
    • TNs
  • Person 4
    • Glasses
    • TNs
Or the alternative:
  • Glasses
    • Person 1
    • Person 2
    • Person 3
    • Person 4
  • TNs
    • Person 1
    • Person 2
    • Person 3
    • Person 4

If you have a strong opinion please post in this thread or contact me, perhaps by private message.

I prefer the alternative. I just find it easier to have all of the placemats together and all of the TN sheets together.

With Roy’s permission, this thread is being bumped. The placemat software is a labo(u)r of love, and has become rather excellent — even if I say so myself.

So some recent examples follow (or see a more complete list), to show what it does and why others should use it. (Reminder: it is free = $0 = £0 = €0 = ¥0.)

I use it periodically when needed for tasting and love it. It's actually pretty easy to do (well the more basic formats are anyways) and if my computer illiterate self figured it out on a Mac anyone can do it. Thanks Julian.

Eric: that is the first time I have seen used in the wild /PermittedPackingStyles [ [/Arch /CentralGlasses 0] ] def. And you have done so rather elegantly.

Out of interest, do you each time download the latest version of the software, or do you use an old version that is on your computer?

And if you post the PDF somewhere I would be willing to add it to the list of placemats.

I'll mark my calendar for the 23 Apr 2051 tasting, but you'll have to make new placements if I can hold on to my Vieira de Sousa, Morgadio da Calçada (Niepoort), and Barão de Vilar that long.
