I suppose it's all relative, but that doesn't seem to be a wide enough range to distinguish between "cheap" and "expensive"

A £3.49 bottle of Claret v a 1955 Pichon Baron en Magnum might have been a better test

Incidentally, anyone who can't tell the difference between Claret and Champagne, whether cheap or not, should perhaps stick to drinking beer

There is another explanation for the result, but it is one that the trade would not like.

Perhaps it is not the tasters who cannot tell the difference, but rather the wines themselves that aren't distinct.
