2005 Fonseca LBV Port

Post by Lamont Huxley »

Although the label states "Unfiltered" boldy across the front, this is bottled in the modern style with a T-cork. According to Fonseca's website it was bottled after 5 years in barrel and is ready to be enjoyed upon release.

After 3+ days of being open this is still going strong. The color is dark purple with an opaque center and flashes of garnet when held up to the light. The nose on this port was really nice even when first popped and poured but it's gotten even better after a few days - blackberry, black cherry and chocolate overlaid with nuances of flowers, herbs and soil. The medium-full bodied palate gives juicy dark fruit up front with hints of licorice. The tannins, as well as some warm spirit, show up on the midpalate but are kept nicely in check by the sweet fruit and ripe acidity that carry into a medium-length finish that echoes with notes of grape jelly. Very good LBV with particularly impressive aromatics. For $17.99 it's a no-brainer. 91 pts, Tasted 6/11
