1991 Dona Matilde Colheita

Purchased at World of Wines in Redmond after a great showing at a tasting there. I generally prefer my Colheitas to be older - around 30 years - but this one is so mellow and so smooth that I couldn't pass up a couple of bottles.
1991 Dona Matilde Colheita
bottled 2009
Color: Medium dark tawny with a good dose of orange-red for color.
Nose: Soft, somewhat spirity. There's less fruit than wood-derived notes like vanilla and very soft butterscotch. Fairly reserved.
Palate: Creamy and smooth. Fresher apricot flavor than normal for a 20 year old tawny. A decent dose of toasted sugar followed by vanilla creme brulee and some light butterscotch. Some might find the acidity light, but I like it this way. Very rich and full body, but not thick or heavy.
Finish: Good warmth and great length for such a "young" Colheita. Tails off with sweet apples. Very nice for sipping.
Score: 92 points. Really an excellent Colheita and a fine pairing with a warm, sunny, spring afternoon.
