A half bottle courtesy of Stewart Todd. At first glance it looked like it might have been a leaker at some point in its past, but when I removed the metal foil capsule I discovered an absolutely pristine cork. The cork extracted smoothly and cleanly and had only stained about 1/4 inch at the very bottom.

1997 Warre Vintage Port

Color: Deep red with some purple overtones. Opaque in the center.
Nose: Smoke, some alcohol. Rich red fruits, almost like overripe raspberries. Fig? Possibly plum?
Palate: Rich grape notes along with an almost spicy heat. Lots of blackberry and deep cassis. Some sweet black cherry, too. Rich and layered. Full body, medium sweet. Lovely in the mouth.
Finish: Starts out nice with echos of the palate, gains some heat, and then exhibits a bitter note. Not that long other than the bitter note, unfortunately. Some stem in the tail.

Score: 91 points. Easily could have scored 92 or maybe even 93 if the finish had been longer and hadn't had the bitter note. The palate was really luscious and pleasing.
