1966 Sandeman
We rounded off the evening with this ‘old’ bottle of Port. I say old, but I was surprised yet again by how young this is tasting. This had stood for 1 day in my cellar prior to opening. I scrapped the brittle black wax with ‘1966’ embossed on it. Predictably, the cork broke into two pieces but I used a flick knife to extract the rest. Decanted at 12.30pm, I tasted it and this is what I found. A pale red with a light pink rim. The nose was overwhelmingly alcoholic with delicate raspberries and dry date fruit. Some nice floral elements made a guest appearance. The mouthfeel was quite alcoholic, with a bold and warming length. Waves of dry fruits and a little burning at the back of the palate.

At the restaurant, it had darkened noticeably, with more herbs and dry dates on the nose and palate. Good length with a hint of alcohol on the finish and very good acidity. Still young. 93/100.
