ISO: IVDP approved port glasses

Post by Andy Velebil »

After using these all week on the trip I have fallen in love with them. At first they were a bit strange to use, but the more I used them the more I liked them.

Problem though...where do I find them in the US. I have checked Amazon, google, etc and no such luck. I don't care if they have a producers logo on them or if they are blank.

Anyone know??

I did one of the first promo pieces for them when they launched the glasses here in the USA. Contact: OHM DESIGN in Brooklyn, NY. If you don't come across them, let me know and I will make sure you are taken care of.

I know it's a bit late now but I managed to pick up a six pack at Porto airport!

Completely agree I think they are great.

What are these glasses? Can someone post a picture or link?

The picture doesn't really do it justice, but one great thing i liked about the glass was that there is a small indentation in the stem for your finger as you hold the glass.

The OHM Design Website doesn't look like it's around anymore. It looks like they had distribution rights for the official Port glasses. Not sure how to get in touch with them now though.

Out of curiosity, what do they cost?

If I remember correctly, I think a set of 6 was about $45.

I've asked Roy for some more info on OHM, the distributors for these glasses. Maybe we can swing a FTLOP discount :)

Stewart, I too found the non-functioning link. I hope Roy can track them down for us.

The funny thing was when we first started using these I didn't like them. But after the second time trying them I realized the glass was much easier to hold onto and swirl. Then the few times we used regular port glasses I really noticed the difference. I never bought any when they first came out because I thought it was a gimmick...boy was I wrong :wall:

Yeah - on the last night before we left, I was thinking - wouldn't it have been cool to ask each of the quintas we visited if I could have or buy one of their logo'ed IDVP Port glasses (for those who used the IDVP ones).

How cool to have a set of official glasses with a different Port producer's logo on each one.

Maybe on the next trip.... :)

Yeah, hindsight is 20-20. Next year I will be sure to ask for one as we drink our way through the Douro 8)

Have no fear, it is my job to deliver this here.

I have received several inquiries this week about Ohm Design and the IVDP sanctioned Port tasting glass. Here is where to purchase it (as Ohm no longer exists):

http://www.amazon.com/Official-Port-Win ... B0001KX7PY

It comes in boxes of six and the full description is there as well.

Here was my first description of it, before I was asked by Ohm to do a promo piece for them, as I had been the first American to write about the glass back in 2003:
http://www.wineloverspage.com/port/ivpshow.phtml

I should remark that although I think Alvaro Siza Vieira did a fabulous job with his glass design, in side-by-side taste/smell tests of Port glassware, including Riedel Vinum, the IVDP glass and the Spieglau Port glasses ... for my nose/taste the best performing glass was the Riedel. I don't have time to find the exact study I did on this, but it was in 2004 or 2005 explained in detail on the Squires' website.

Unfortunately, Amazon says: "Note: This item is currently not available."

I would also like a set of these.

I'll tell you what. I know the importer and will contact them. Maybe this would be a first ... but if it makes sense, I will offer them for sale on the website in time for the holidays.

Are you guys willing to wait a month or so?

Ok, I spoke to the US importer and there is a manufacturing problem in Portugal at the moment. He is going to check the timing for obtaining a sizeable delivery here in the USA, as there is none in the USA for sale at the moment, unless a small shop may still have a few in stock. More info as he will get back in touch with me with an update from Portugal.

Roy,

At the London offline in Nov 05 I noticed that you had 2 very nice glasses in a wooded case that had the IDVP logo (guarantee label) printed on the side of the glass. Can I ask where you got these and whether or not they are available for sale somewhere?

Stuart,

I have 12 of these port glasses purchased 2 years ago in VNG, each with a different shippers name/logo printed on the side. These came in very handy when Alex and I had a private tasting session a couple of months ago as I could put the Graham's in a Graham's glass, the Noval in a Noval glass etc 8)

I'd be very happy to wait. Even happier if they arrived with the various logos on them! ;)

While we're at it, Roy, do you know a good source for the Port tongs we saw demonstrated at Portal?

Got an offer for EUR 45,- per 6 pack.

Still deciding if i should take them or not. If - how many?

Can anyone please explain the difference between these glasses and for example Riedel ones? Except that the here mentioned have the IVP logo, of course.

If anyone is interested i could also provide the name of the ditributor.

Greetings,

Andreas

I think the only difference between them is personal preference. Some of the people on the recent Douro trip loved the fact that the official tasting glasses had a little indentation in the stem for you to put your thumb. Personally, I just found it irritating to be told by the glass how I had to hold it.

We tasted out of both Riedel and IVP tasting glasses. I prefer the Riedel glasses but did not really find any significant difference between the two.
