1978 Krohn Colheita Port

Post by David Spriggs »

My first drink of Port in a couple of months:

Bottled in 2007. Very tawny appearance. Some light rust color in the core, but there is a substantial amber rim. It really looks quite old. Punjent nose of grape, orange, and a good punch of alcohol. This isn't a surprise to me since the alcohol is part of the house style. I don't get any off aromas or VA. Overtly sweet palate. I'm getting a lot of marzipan and bitter orange. After a few sips the acidity builds and plays a bigger supporting role. A touch of alcohol on the palate, but it does give the wine lift and a touch of spicy complexity. Medium length finish. Very clean. A nice sippable wine. Much better than I expected! I keep coming back to this and the glass is quickly drained. :D 91 points.

After tasting this over the next two days, I have to update this tasting note. The wine has changed quite a bit. The palate is now significantly marked by a beautiful roasted coffee. The weight of the wine has also markedly increased. The wine is certainly more complex now and really shows it's age. It appears to be 40+ years old. A really excellent wine! Upgrading the score to 92 points.

I always think that's the best compliment to a wine, when it disappears out of your glass almost unexpectedly and you want more. Good to hear you're well enough to imbibe again!
