Worth the hassle? Or just too old to bother with?

Miguel,

It sounds like a good deal for a wine almost a decade old. And Callabriga is a decent enough producer. I've just posted on a 2001 Dao that is drinking very nicely so I expect the same from the '03 Callabriga.

Cheers................Mahmoud..

I would buy a decent number. Since coming here i have come around more and more to the idea that most Douro reds (other than those claimed to be "modern" or "fresh") need 10 years. If possible I like to try a couple of bottles when purchased, and then keep a check on them maybe once a year if I decide to cellar some. It does mean that there are none left of most wines from my initial stocking up when I arrived in 2003, but I have bought subsequent vintages of the same ones if they become available. A crude system, but it seems to work.

Opened one of the Alentejo bottles this weekend. Right after pouring seemed v thin but 10 mins later showed itself to be a nice wine. Great deal at $6! [yahoo.gif]

Well done Miguel, nice score.

I opened another of the '01 Garrida Dao and it was lovely. Strangely enough it reminded people of Bordeaux (it was served blind) but part of the reason was that it followed a '98 Bordeaux. Mature, elegant and silkily medium-bodied, it went very well with the rare roast beef.

Cheers....................Mahmoud.
