Since its my birthday (ok, actually yesterday was, but I had to work...), I though I would start the day off with this one, from a 375ml bottle. These notes are just after opening the bottle.

The color is a very light carmel and orange with a hint of green in it. The nose has some VA and hints of oak, slight toffee, and a faint herbalness to it. On the palate it is very rich and just explodes in the mouth and has waves of toasted almonds, glycerin, a touch of cedar and vanilla. Unfortunitly, the finish loses some of that compexity and is not super long, slighting reducing its overall score. None-the-less, a very tasty 40 year tawny and a good start to the day. 91-92 points

I also just opened a 2000 Niepoort Secundum (from 1/2 bottle) as this is one that I've never tried before. Will post on this one later.

Coming back to the 40 year about 3 hours later, I can say she has opened up. The palate has really come alive with some pepper and spice and the the finish has gained complexity and length. I would easily say 93 points at this time..maybe 94, but we'll see how she does over the long haul.

I'll chime in with a Happy Birthday as well at this point.

Have a great day of port! :D
