For The Love Of Port

In keeping in line with other wine-related sites, we're happy to announce that we've opened up a user tasting notes forum. This will allow our growing Port community to share their Tasting Notes with other users, segregated from other Port related posts.

Please post any Madeira TNs in the Madeira forum, and anything else in the Other Discussion forum.

Please let me know if you have any questions or problems with the new forum, and enjoy!

How will this work in the past tense...i.e., should I look up all of my old TNs that I posted earlier in the VT or PF and copy them over? Shall it just be for new notes?

For now, just post NEW TNs here.

I'm investigating what will be the easiest way to get the old TNs moved over to this forum.

Just read Roy's rules. Quite right.

Stewart deserves the credit for being able to put this together so quickly. I think it is a "win-win" for all the users of the FTLOP and shows that we absolutely do listen AND are quite flexible when things make sense. Glad to see that you gents approve and the only issue that I leave to you (and if Stewart has the time or wants to be involved) is the migration of old tasting notes.

Very worthwhile addition!

May I suggest that the abbreviation TN is omitted from all the subject titles, and that the year (in four digit format) always precedes the name of the shipper.

This way, Stewart stands a sporting chance of being able to engineer some sort of sorting arrangement, so we don't have to trawl through the entire list when trying to find something..

a good suggestion..I just cut and pasted them over...i will edit them, as the "TN:" is really no longer needed.

I'm trawling through Andy's notes with interest. Hopefully in time we will have an extensive Library of Notes.
I would like to raise the Scoring issue whilst Andy is our 'Guinea Pig'.
Shouldn't it be encouraged to leave a score. It was suggested we use Tom's method. I'm happy either way.
But there was discussion of this project being used as a reference guide as well as a good read.
Today I hunted out the Wine Spectators mark for the Taylor Vargellas 65. I would love, in time to be able to see the average score of my fellow Forumites, and consider that the most reliable score. To do that the vast majority of Notes would have to be 'rated'.

What say you guys? And if you agree, which system, and where should the rating be left, so that Stewart can pick it up and catalogue them?

I think the rating or lack thereof should be left up to the individual poster. Some people write good notes, but don't like to put scores. Some use 10 point, ***'s, 100 point systems, etc. I would hate for someone not to post a TN just because of a mandatory scoring system that they don't use. IMO, the most important part of TN is the text anyways.

Here is another question. Should all TN's be listed under one original post, for a particular Port?

For example;
2003 Niepoort VP

Poster "A" puts in the first TN in the new section. Two months later Poster
"B" puts in a new TN (as a reply) when he tried it. And so on.

That would save someone from searching through a ton of individual posts to see how 5 people rated the same Ports.

Just a thought?

On scores, we could all agree that when the author wants to leave a score they should use one of the following formats at the very end of the post, thereby giving Stewart a chance to isolate them at a later date:

Score: ???/100
Score: ??/20
Score: *****
Score: 10-10

This is developing into a multi stream thread but I think we need to get some general rules agreed before it all turns into spagetti.

As this area is to be the reference point for TN's rather than a discussion area can I suggest that people continue to post TN's in the normal way on the Port Forum and Virtual Tasting Room and then, once they are happy that their note is complete (ie once they have finished the bottle) they create a single note in this area in an agreed format.

Personally, I think it would be good if some of us could be given Moderator status for this area to allow us to keep the house tidy and lock down notes once published.

I wouldn't want this to fall to Stewart or Roy as they will have enough to do when Roy returns to find a list of 67 other things we want him to implement when he gets back from VNG

I think it would be better to have threads locked down to avoid discussions emerging. I can see it now "can you please move your discussion to the Port Forum" will join "What is your real name?" as the most used phrases on FTLOP :?

I think if we have standard naming convension for the Subject line then people should be able to find multiple posts on the same wine using the search facility.

I have to ask my 9 year old son about Computers, so if what I'm about to say sounds drivel, I apologise.

I was hoping for a facility like Wine Searcher, were you could enter the Tasting Notes Thread, punch in 'Fonseca 85' and see that there were 6 reviews. That the average score was 91 and click here to read those reviews. It seems to work on all the internet sites selling Electrical Goods and the like?

As I said, if thats unrealistic, sorry.
